Melton Thoroughbreds losing in on finals

Melton Thoroughbreds have all but wrapped up a finals spot in the Big V men’s division 2 competition.

A win against Sherbrooke Suns on Saturday means the Thoroughbreds are two games and percentage ahead of seventh-placed Pakenham Warriors, which has an extra game to play.

A win against Mildura Heat will ensure a finals spot.

On Sunday, the Thoroughbreds put in a solid performance against the Suns.

After trailing by two points at quarter-time, the Thoroughbreds took a two-point lead into half-time after a high-scoring second quarter.

The third quarter was the Thoroughbreds’ best and they increased the margin to nine points.

They finished it off in the last, winning 88-76.

The Thoroughbreds had plenty of scoring options, with four of the five starters and five players overall scoring double figures. Emmanuel Malou top-scored with 21 points, while also having 13 rebounds and four blocks.

The Thoroughbreds’ women had a mixed weekend after two weeks off.

They lost to North East Bushrangers on Saturday night 68-65, before a big win against Sherbrooke Suns on Sunday.

On Saturday night, a slow start proved costly. The Thoroughbreds trailed by 12 points at quarter-time and never really got back into the game.

On Sunday, the Thoroughbreds did all the damage in the third quarter, outscoring the Suns 31-8, before winning 93-65.
