Melton Thoroughbreds got a much-needed win in Big V women’s division 2 on Saturday.
The Thoroughbreds had lost their previous three games, so victory and finals hopes were very much on their minds.
For the most part, the game against the Mornington Breakers was an even affair, with the second quarter proving to be the difference.
The Thoroughbreds won that quarter 25-17 – and eight points would be the final margin in the 70-62 win.
Thoroughbreds coach Lauren Olcorn said the performance was her players’ best of the season so far.
“We’ve been aiming the last couple of weeks to get back on track,” she said.
“It was a pretty strong game and we stuck to the game plan. We made a focus of winning the board, which is something we’ve struggled with.
“We were able to do that and didn’t slacken off.”
Olcorn said the difference this week was the side’s ability to deliver consistent basketball for four quarters.
“We would have one poor quarter and we wouldn’t be able to pull out of the lull and had to play catch-up basketball,” she said.
“We spoke after the game about playing together as a team on the floor and having that consistency over four quarters.
“We showed what we have to do every week now.”
Olcorn said another pleasing element of the win was the even team performance, with everyone playing the role they had been allocated.
All nine players who got on court scored, with Jenna Conroy top scoring with 14 points.
The win leaves the Thoroughbreds with a 4-4 record.
Olcorn said she was hopeful the victory was something she and the players could improve upon in the coming weeks.
“It’s early enough in the season, we can set aside those four losses,” she said.
“We’re by no means shutting down – we know we can get back into the top four again. We want to push on with more wins.”
The Thoroughbreds’ men had a massive 100-77 win against the Mornington Breakers.
Chris Johnson stop-scored with 23 points, while Deakin Pereira shot 18.
The win is the Thoroughbreds’ third in a row as they continue to pressure the top four.
It was a hat-trick of wins for the Thoroughbreds against the Breakers, with their youth league 2 men’s side winning 84-76.
Max Beaumont continued his good form by top-scoring with 17 points.
