Melton Thoroughbreds are looking at achieving their best ever Big V men’s youth league division 2 result.
The Thoroughbreds have made finals just once before in the youth league competition, when they were knocked out in the opening round in 2016.
This year they are hoping they can take it a few steps further and take out the championship.
Thoroughbreds’ coach Josh Crowe said they were excited about what the next few weeks can bring.
“We had our finals spot sorted out about five weeks ago,” he said.
“Considering its only the second time a Melton youth league team has made finals, everyone is really keen.
“A few of the older boys were involved last time and a couple of our guys have played in high pressure games as well.
“Hopefully the other guys will step up too.”
While the Thoroughbreds knew they would be playing finals for a number of weeks, they still had a lot to play for up until the final round.
A victory in the final round would give the side home court advantage in an elimination final.
They did exactly that, defeating the Western Port Steelers, 91-83.
Broden Collins top scored for the Thoroughbreds with 26 points, while Koby Skenderis scored 19 points.
Crowe said the focus, as it had been all season was winning the championship.
They start their finals campaign on Saturday night against Craigieburn Eagles at 7pm.
“We’re playing pretty well,” he said. “It’s about keeping the boys focused and the attitudes positive.
“We’ve played them [Craigieburn ] twice during the regeluar season and once in the preseason.
“They haven’t beaten us. We’ll take a little bit of confidence, but anything can happen in finals.:”
