Melton Thoroughbreds’ finals hopes will be on the line when they return to the court next week in Big V women’s division 2 basketball.
The Thoroughbreds, who are in the middle of a two-week break, are seventh, two games behind fifth-placed Northern East Bushrangers.
Having been in the top five until recently, a few tough few weeks have seen the Thoroughbreds slip out of a finals spot.
Thoroughbreds coach Lauren Olcorn said they had dropped a few winnable games.
“Results haven’t gone our way,” she said. “We’re playing good basketball and pushing the top teams, so we are up there with them, but we can’t get the results.
“It will be tough to get back up there with three games left. Each of those games are must win.”
Olcorn said that a two-week break at this time of the season was less than ideal, but they had been training hard and trying to refine a few things.
She said that while making finals would be exciting, they were already winners in their first season back in the competition since 2010.
“We are still a young team and it’s our first season together,” she said.
“We’ve only played 15 games together and are still learning about each other.
“We’ll push through the next three weeks and look to finish the season on a high. We’ll hold our heads up high.”
It”s been a big couple of weeks for Olcorn, as she played her 250th Big V game.
Olcorn said it was a special moment, having thought she would never play for Melton again after the team folded a number of years ago.
“I’m so grateful to be back at Melton and come home and play on my home court,” she said.
“It’s very special moment and I’m grateful to the support of Melton Basketball Association.
