Melton Rugby Union out but not down

It was grand final heartache for Melton Rugby Union Club on Saturday.

After a fairytale season in the Victoria Rugby League 2B division, Melton fell just short in its grand final against Ballarat.

Scores were level, with 10 minutes to go, when a Melton player was sent off for arguing a referee’s decision.

Ballarat made the most of its extra player and scored a try, which proved the winner, and took the title 18-13.

Melton vice-president Liam Devlin said it was heartbreaking to get so close, only to fall short.

“It was disappointing as we had played so well,” he said. “We knew it was going to be a tight and a really close game.

“We started the stronger of the two teams and had the better part of it in the first half hour.

“Things started to swing their way. With 10 minutes to go, it was 13-13. The last six minutes, they were able to control it after they had hit the front.

“It was the tightest of margins.”

Devlin said he’s proud of how far his side has come this season after it folded last year due to a lack of numbers.

“It was a great first year back and, hopefully, there’s a fire in the belly to go one further next year. We went better than expected.

“Most of the players are looking to stick around for a few years. It’s a good starting block for the future.”

While the seniors’ run is over, the club still has junior sides in finals.
