Melton made it two wins in a row as its closes the gap on the top four in Bowls Victoria Pennant division 1, section 1.
After a poor start to the season, Melton has started to find form the past two weeks.
Having struggled against the top sides so far, Melton turned up the pressure against third-placed Werribee on Saturday.
Melton won two of the four rinks, to win 82 (14)-62 (4).
Melton secretary John Adams said it was the best side they had on paper all year.
“We had a few players back for both the top two sides and we’ve still got a couple of players in the wings.
“To win down in Werribee is especially pleasing.”
David George’s rink won 27-6 and Conrad Dawson’s rink won by two shots. Craig Norris, in his first round as skip, lost by two shots while Ray Gnjidic’s rink lost by five shots. Adams said club captain Travis Kelly and George had really good games after struggling early in the season.
Despite the win, Melton remains fifth on the ladder, but the margin to fourth-placed Sunbury has been reduced to 11 after Sunbury played in a tie.
It seems like it will be a battle for the third and fourth spots over the rest of the season, with the top two sides out clear.
Melton’s next match is against Brunswick, and Adams said they would take a lot of confidence into the match.
“We should win and if we play the way we’ve played the last two weeks we’ll get the win.
Hopefully now we have to do just fine-tuning of the rinks.”
Melton’s second side opened its account on Saturday, defeating Yarraville-Footscray (2) 89 (16)- 70 (2).
Melton sits 10th after six rounds. Melton’s top four sides all got wins at the weekend.
Melton has a week off, with the pennant competition not running this week due to the Vic Open. Adams said not many of their bowlers would be competing in the open.
Meanwhile, Bacchus Marsh Gold’s unbeaten start to the Central Highlands Bowls Division’s top grade has ended.
Facing Kyneton Golf, which was also undefeated, Gold lost 105 (14)-97 (4). Phil Minniti and Glenn Arthur led the winning rinks for Gold.
Bacchus Marsh Blue had a tough day against Gisborne. It was a complete whitewash, with Gisborne winning 158 (18)-58 (0).
Romsey won three rinks in its 105 (16)-95 (2) win against Trentham and Kyneton won a thriller against Lancefield.
Just one shot separated the two teams with Kyneton winning 94 (14)-93 (4).
In division 2, Diggers Rest lost to Macedon, while Diggers Rest’s second side lost to Trentham in division 3.
