Melton Lions suffered a first-up loss to Bayswater in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association’s east-west competition.
Originally scheduled as a two-day match, it became a one-dayer after the opening day was cancelled due to not enough pitches being ready for play.
Winning the toss, the Lions struggled to get partnerships going.
Each time they looked like they were getting on a run, they would lose a wicket.
They were in trouble at 5-70.
Playing coach Nathan Geisler and Ashley Sweet put together a partnership of 48 to push the score up near the 120 mark before Sweet fell for 20.
The Lions then lost their last five wickets for 32 to be all out for 152 on the final ball.
Geisler top-scored with 51.
After the loss of an early wicket, Bayswater did it with ease, passing the target with three wickets down.
Dylan Clarke took two wickets for the Lions.
The Lions’ seconds also suffered a first-up loss.
Batting first, the Lions could make just 9-132 off their 40 overs.
Bayswater chased down the total with ease, making the runs with 18 overs and nine wickets to spare.
Melton’s firsts will host its first home match of the season on Saturday, taking on Box Hill.
