Melton including everyone

Melton Cricket Club will field an all-abilities side this season.

Lions’ president Kevin Vernon came up with the idea after playing with two players with disabilities in the club’s lower grades last season.

“A couple of autistic boys were playing in the fourths with me,” he said.

“One plays for Victoria and if he wanted to play in an all-abilities side, he had to travel to Bendigo each week.

“These guys are part of the club and we want to give them the opportunity to play.”

Vernon, who will coach and manage the side, said they already had seven or eight players on board.

They are looking to have a squad of about 15 players.

Melton council is behind the side and the club is putting out fliers looking for players.

Vernon said the side will play every fortnight starting from late October and would play on turf at MacPherson Park.

They will play in the Melbourne All Abilities Cricket Association with the hope there will be a west division to reduce travel.

The side will hold training sessions on September 10 and 24 at Kurunjang Reserve between 9.30-11am for anyone interested in joining.
