Melton’s Karlos Nuestro was one of the stars of the show at the Victorian age swimming championships over the past two weeks at the Melbourne Aquatic Centre.
The 12-year-old swam in nine individual events and two relays, bringing home three gold medals.
He finished second in the 100-metre breaststroke and third in the 200-metre breaststroke and 200-metre individual medley.
Gold medals were his reward, even though he finished behind swimmers from overseas and interstate, because he was first among the Victorian competitors.
Nuestro swam in individual events in freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and the individual medley. He made seven finals and swam 12 personal best times.
Nuestro’s swim in the 100-metre breaststroke was fast enough to qualify him for the national age group championships – the first time he’s qualified for the nationals.
His recent effort tops his tally of a gold and two silver, which he won 12 months ago.
Nuestro wasn’t the only Melton swimmer to come home with a medal; Jack Carr won silver in the 15-year-old boys’ 100-metre freestyle and bronze in the 200 and 100-metre butterfly in the same age group.
Carr also recorded a national time in the 100-metre backstroke. He made seven finals and recorded eight personal best times.
Grace McGoldrick won silver in the 16-year-old girls 200-metre butterfly event, while Noah O’Donnell took home bronze in the boys’ 11-and-under 100-metre butterfly.
Altogether, Melton had 30 swimmers competing at the championships.
Between them they swam in 137 individual events, and several competed in relays as well.
The swimmers recorded 77 personal best times, and made the finals in 26 events.
Kayla Jones made finals in four individual events, while Mitchell Wills made finals in three.
Of all the clubs competing, Melton came 22nd overall.
