There were early signs it was going to be Dylan Weir’s day in Melton Centrals’ clash with Lancefield.
The forward kicked five goals in the opening minutes of the Riddell District Football League clash and by the end of the first quarter had seven.
The goals continued throughout the day, with the big man kicking 19 in Centrals’ 29.17 (191)-3.8 (26) win.
Weir, who was suffering a cold on game day, said he didn’t expect to have a day out like he did.
“After those first five kicks I thought I was nearly done,” he said. “I had fluid on my lungs and I was already puffing and could hardly stand. We were fairly confident that we would have an OK day– I just wanted to play my role.”
Weir has kicked a few bags before, but said he had never experienced a day like it.
He kicked so many goals, he had lost track by the end of the game.
“Things just held for me and I didn’t know I’d kicked so many,” he said.
“I thought I’d kicked 15 or 16, so I was in a bit of shock in the end.
“Even now, I’m still getting posts and messages asking me what happened. I’d kicked bags of nine or 10 before, but never this many.”
Weir said his teammates looked after him once the match result was clear, looking for him instead of having shots on goal to get his tally up.
The 19 goals earned Weir best on ground status and moved him to the top of the league’s goalkicking.
Joseph Callus was the only other multiple goalkicker for Centrals, with two goals.
Samuel Apineru and Michael Callus were two of the other standouts for Centrals.
The win moves them to 3-4 and a game outside the top four.
Weir said getting big wins was important, as they only play the bottom sides once. He said he was enjoying his first season at Centrals.
“It’s a good club and a good group of people,” he said.
In other matches, Diggers Rest returned to the winners’ list with a massive win against Rockbank.
After a shock loss the previous round, the Burras made certain early on it wasn’t going to happen a second time.
The Burras led by 53 points at quarter-time and had extended the margin to 111 points at the main break.
After the break, the Burras didn’t let up, eventually winning 30.29 (209)-2.2 (14).
Cameron McCabe was best on ground, kicking 11 goals for the Burras. Jamie Austin was the Rams’ best.
Macedon had a solid 13.14 (92)-5.7 (37) win against Romsey, Riddell beat Sunbury Kangaroos 18.16 (124)-2.5 (17), Woodend-Hesket defeated Broadford 24.21 (165)-2.4 (16) and Wallan downed Rupertswood 8.12 (60)-7.11 (53).
