Grand end to first season for Caroline Springs

It was two from two for Caroline Springs Hockey Club, with both their women’s sides winning through to Hockey Victoria winter competition grand finals.

After both women’s sides claimed the minor premiership in their first season, Caroline Springs wasn’t content with just making finals.

They wanted grand final spots.

The women’s top side, which competes in F-grade pennant, remains undefeated after a 7-0 win against Gippsland Bulls on Saturday.

Holly Azzopardi and Laura Brown scored two goals each, while Aimee Jungfer, Fran Lennie, Megan Shadbolt and Lucy Steele also scored.

Caroline Springs women’s coach Ron Shadbolt said the scoreboard didn’t reflect the game.

“The scoreboard didn’t show that it was a tough contested game.

“Some of the goals were high quality goals. I don’t think you would have stopped them in any league.

“Narelle McMillan in the midfield had a huge work rate all day. Laura Brown scored two goals, but her defensive efforts stood out and Aimee Jungfer, one of our younger players, had a really good game.

“Overall it was pretty good team effort.”

It was a much closer affair for the metro B north-west against Powerhouse St Kilda.

Jessica Spence scored the only goal of the game to seal a 1-0 win for Caroline Springs.

Shadbolt said neither side had many chances to score.

“It was a really even game and there was nothing between the two teams,” he said. “We got the lucky break and scored that goal, which I think we earnt.

“The goal was at the 25-minute mark and no team looked liked scoring from then on. It was a team we hadn’t beaten all season.

“I think we might see them in the grand final.”

Both sides have the week off, before the grand finals the following weekend.
