Golden year for Melton Centrals junior girls

It was an excited Melton Centrals junior girls football team last Sunday.

In its first season, the team came away with the inaugural AFL Goldfields Riddell junior girls’ premiership.

Centrals, who finished second, caused an upset when they knocked off minor premier Bacchus Marsh.

The Cobras had won the semi-final between the two teams, 35-5.

Centrals’ girls football manager Janelle Lampi said the grand final was one of the best games the girls had played all season.

It was a low scoring affair, with Centrals winning 2.3 (15)-1.5 (11).

“The girls came together and played together as a team,” she said.

“One of our girls touched a shot for goal [in the third quarter] on the line which would have been a goal for them. That could have gone either way.”

Lampi said the girls were pleased by the win, but some didn’t realise they had won the premiership.

Once they did there was plenty of celebrations.

“It was really surreal,” she said.

“They were stunned. They were asking who we played the next week. We had to explain that was the last game for the season.”

Ella Tyson was named best on ground by the umpires.

Lampi said the club had been thrilled with performances of not only the junior girls’ side, but also the youth girls’ side.

The youth girls’ side was knocked out in the preliminary final by Sunbury Kangaroos.

“We had a really good bunch of girls that worked hard together,” she said.

“Our youth girls put up a fight. They’ve been getting further each year.”

The club already has plans for a third side next season. They would like to field an under-15 girls team.
