Dragons stagger home

Gisborne’s finals hopes have been given a shot in the arm with victory over ladder leader Diggers Rest Bulla in Gisborne and District Cricket Association’s McIntyre Cup.

Batting first, the Burras would have been disappointed with their 113 total.

No batsman really got going and playing coach Kevin Barker top-scored with 23.

Gisborne shared the wickets around, all five bowlers taking two apiece.

Then it was the Dragons’ turn to struggle; they lost seven wickets before reaching the target. Eamon McKenna top-scored with 43 in a score of 7-114.

Rhys Berry took three wickets for the Burras.

It was one of three upsets for the round, with Sunbury and Sunbury United also knocking off higher-ranked opponents.

Sunbury got its second win of the season by beating Woodend.

Sunbury made 6-172 off its overs then bowled out Woodend for 150.

With Saturday’s victory over Romsey, Sunbury United has won three of its past four matches.

Romsey, which surprised several teams early in the season, struggled with the bat and was skittled for 94, skipper Chris Burkett top-scoring with 23.

United, which was without skipper Jeremy Newman, didn’t miss a beat and former captain James Hughes took 3-12 in his first match since round one. Josh Smith also took three wickets.

United made the runs easily, Adam Billinghurst scoring 61 of the 1-98 total.

In the other match, Riddell beat Bacchus Marsh to return to the top of the ladder. Riddell chased down the Marsh’s 9-143 with five wickets to spare.
