Young Eagles pushed into new territory

Winning is all part of the routine at Eynesbury Cricket Club.

In just their fourth season, the Eagles are again at the top end of the Western Suburbs United Churches Cricket A-grade competition, occupying second spot with a 3-1 record.

This success comes hot on the heels of last season’s premiership, but is nonetheless remarkable given how much change the club went through in the off-season.

The Eagles have had to get used to a new home ground, an adjustment in leadership and a turnover of players.

Club president Matt Scalzo said players had embraced every challenge with a great attitude.

“We are doing really well,” he said.

“The standout in our first XI has been Mark Pino, one of our change bowlers who’s leading the competition for wickets taken.

“He has formed a really good combination with Scott Lynch. The two of them have really started off strongly.”

The 2015-16 season is also remarkably different for Scalzo, who has stepped back from an extremely heavy schedule.

Having previously been coach and first XI captain, he is now focused on his role as president, helping to expand the club’s growing junior division.

Scalzo said that, given the club’s rapid growth, spreading the workload would be the best thing going forward.

“I really wanted to concentrate on being president of the club. That was due to the fact we were running three senior teams and four juniors.

“We are really focusing on that aspect of the club.

“We employed a junior co-ordinator to look after things this year. He’s been working tirelessly on getting the four junior teams up and running.”

Captain-coach of the Eagles this season is premiership player Ray Davis, while Brett McGrath remains vice-captain.

Eynesbury will look to build on its strong form when it takes on Williams Landing this week.
