EDFL clubs band together for bushfires

Clubs from across the Essendon District Football League are uniting together to help raise funds for those affected by the bushfires.

Two football matches, one men’s and one women’s will be held on February 16 made up of players from across the league in what is expected to be a big day to raise money for bushfire victims. It’s hoped that players from every EDFL club will be part of the day.

The day is the idea of Roxburgh Park coach Michael Farrelly.

The EDFL also quickly jumped on board and is helping organise the day.

The plan had originally been to hold the event on January 27, but it had been put back to allow more time to organise.

Farrelly said this was the perfect way that they could help those who had been affected.

“Footy is a big thing for us,” he said.

“The best way we can help is to put on a jumper and raise some money for the guys that are suffering.

“If we can get together and raise some money, it will be a massive help.” Farrelly said they had been blown away from the support from other clubs wanting to be involved.

Farrelly said within three days 27 clubs had already committed to be involved.

Several others have indicated on social media that they were keen to have some players part of the day.

Farrelly said some clubs, including his own, would have trouble deciding who would be part of it, with so many players interested.

Not only were players interested in being part of it, coaches from across the league were also keen to help out.

Aberfeldie’s Adam Potter, Tullamarine’s David Connell, Coburg Districts’ Tom Gleeson, Westmeadows’ Mo Kaakour and Craigieburn’s Lance Whitnall along with Farrelly have committed to be part of the men’s coaching panels.

“It will be a normal game of football and [we’ll] have a lot of fun with it.”

Farrelly said there had been a number of local companies wanting to get involved. Anyone interested in getting involved can contact Roxburgh Park or the EDFL.
