Diggers Rest and the Sunbury Kangaroos unite for McDonald House

Diggers Rest and the Sunbury Kangaroos will this week play off for the Ronald McDonald House Charities Vic and Tas Cup.

Playing for the cup the first time, the two teams will look to raise money and awareness for the Ronald McDonald Houses in Victoria and Tasmania.

As well as playing for the cup, players will shake donation tins on the day, while there will be raffles, a spinning wheel, face painting and other activities at Bloomdale Reserve throughout the day.

Burras’ president Ben Morse said it’s cause close to the hearts of their members and players, and the club is extremely proud to support this cause.

Kangaroos’ Marc Bullows said the club had previously been involved in McHappy Day and were keen to continue get involved again.

“Both clubs have come together to make people aware and hopefully raise a bit more money for the charity houses and what they provide.”

McDonalds community relation’s manager Sandra Collins said she was thrilled to have the two clubs come together for such a good cause.

Collins said raising funds and awareness of the Ronald McDonald Houses was a passion of hers.

“I do a lot of fundraising for the McDonalds’ houses,” she said.

“These houses are a home away from home. We’re trying to get the word across.

“A lot of people relate McHappy Day to buying Big Macs, not raising money to Ronald McDonald House.”

Collins said these houses helped people and their families, while people were receiving medical treatment.

A new long-term accommodation house is set to open in Fitzroy, with existing ones in Parkville and Monash.

There’s also a family room at Sunshine Hospital.

Collins said people from the Sunbury area benefit from these houses, when they have loved ones in hospital.

The fundraising starts from 10am and will run through to the end of the senior football game.
