New Bacchus Marsh coach Lisa Tyrell is keen to help the club start to turn things around in the Ballarat Netball League.

It’s been a tough few years for the Cobras, including failing to win a game in A-grade this year, but the club has continued to fight hard and still field an A-grade team.

Having been part of the club with her daughter playing netball and son playing football, Tyrell decided that she would put her hand up to coach.

“It’s great,” she said. “I’ve been at the club since we moved to Bacchus Marsh in 2012.

“I coached the under-15s and under-17s in junior netball for about four years. I understand the struggles that they’ve had last year and trying to get someone to step into the role is quite tough.

“I thought I would get in and help them and do what I can to help them improve.”

Tyrell played in the South Australia Districts Netball Association for many years at representative level.

She had a stint in the South Australian state league with Newton Jaguars and also played for her state in the indoor national titles and was named in the All-Australian team.

Tyrell said with most of her experience in South Australia, she didn’t have a lot of netball contacts in Victoria and would look to develop the local girls.

“I want to get players in who I can get the best out of them,” she said. “Sometimes you have to go back to the basics and get the skills right.

“I’ll look to get a bit more structure in there. I’m excited to see how we go and get some improvement and some runs on the board.

“I might shake it up in some of the lower grades.”

Tyrell said she was keen to push some of the juniors up into the senior grades to give them the opportunity to play at the higher level.

The Cobras have started pre-season and this week had Melbourne Vixens training partners Maggie Caris and Ruby Barkmeyer in attendance for a second session.

Tyrell said the girls had really embraced the opportunity to have high level players at training.

She said any players who were interested in joining the welcome to come down as they rebuild the club.

They will hold trials early next year.
