A big day for Bacchus Marsh was capped off with the side taking home the four points against the Sunbury Lions in the Ballarat Football League on Saturday.
In a standalone match, the Cobras held their own Big Freeze to raise money for motor neurone disease.
Sliders from both clubs and across the Bacchus Marsh community all went down the ice cold slide.
On field, the match was game 250 for premiership winning captain Tyson Shea.
Despite all the distractions, the Cobras were able to focus on the task at hand and put on a good show on field.
The Cobras took the win, 15.8 (98)-6.11 (47).
Cobras coach Tom German said it was a really good day for the club.
“The club put on a show,” he said. “MND is pretty close to the heart up at the club and I couldn’t speak highly enough.
“They were able to put on a really good show that just added to the football.”
German said it had been a tough couple of weeks with injury, COVID-19 and the flu, but on Saturday they had been able to welcome back a number of players.
It helped as the Cobras took control of the game after quarter time.
It was 11 goals to just four after the first break.
German said it was a really good team performance.
“We got some numbers back and we played a really good brand of football that we had been training for,” he said.
“The difference for us was the pressure around the contest which let us spread a lot better and we could get some better inside 50s.
“We kicked straight, which was a difference as well.”
German said the forward line worked well together, with several young guys among those at that end of the ground.
He said there was a group of about five or six under-19s coming through, which was strong signs for the future.
Joel Freeman and Aaron Willitts kicked four goals each for the Cobras, while Daniel Burton and Josh Calvitto kicked two apiece.
German said he was impressed with the game of Jake Owen who played down back instead of his normal forward role, while Daniel Burton was strong in the ruck.
He said they were thrilled to get the win for Shea in his milestone game.
“He has been a great part of the club and for me as a coach he has been fantastic.
”It was really good to get a win for him on the day.”
The win, the Cobras third of the season, jeeps them in touch with the top six. German said in such a close competition, every match was an ‘eight point’ match.
The Cobras’ now have a break with the rest of round nine to be played this coming weekend.
German said it came at a good time and they would get some more reinforcements back for their match with Sebastopol.
