Melton has already experienced the highs and lows in its Bowls Victoria pennant campaign.
After a slow start to the year, the club’s division 1 side was feeling the burden of relegation pressure.
But after three wins in a row, Melton is in fourth spot on the table, its attention turned to a finals berth.
The club’s most recent victory came in the form of a five-shot buffer against Werribee on Saturday.
Melton Bowls Club secretary John Adams said the rollercoaster start meant only one thing was certain: the club needed to attack the year knowing it had no margin for error.
“We just need to keep winning,” Adams said.
“We really don’t have a choice. If we do that, we’ll be able to stay up in that top four, which is vital.
“A couple of weeks ago, you could hear the guys saying we needed a win to get out of the relegation zone. Now we’re talking about staying in the four.
“It all changes quickly when you can get a couple of wins and get that confidence.”
Having welcomed several new recruits in the off-season, Melton’s division 1 side took a little while to gel through the early weeks of the season.
But the longer the season has gone on, the more the squad has become accustomed to working together.
Adams says the division 1 side now has the balance in its rinks just right.
“The past couple of games, the team has settled down a bit.
“We were making a few changes in the first few weeks trying to get it all right. We seem to have a well balanced team now, and the club is really gelling together. That is all you can ask for.
“One week, one rink will star, and the next week it will be someone else. That is the best thing about the top side; they’re really working together now.”
Melton gets the chance to take a stranglehold on a top-four spot in the coming weeks, with the club set to take on sixth-placed Preston-Reservoir and second-placed Altona Sports.
It’s also been a good start to the year for Melton’s division 2 side, which is in fifth spot on the ladder, while its division 3 outfit is third.
