Bowlers taking time to gel

Melton is aiming to set up its Bowls Victoria season in the next month.

The club has taken time to adjust to the new division 1 season and occupies seventh spot with a 2-2 record.

After the top side made finals last year, Melton Bowls Club secretary John Adams is confident of an imminent upswing.

Adams said it had taken time for new recruits and existing players to gel, but he expects Melton will be back to its best soon.

“We’re still making minor changes to the rinks to try and get the right combinations. It’s just a matter of doing that and getting the confidence up.”

Melton took the first steps to regaining form at the weekend with a 19-shot win against Altona.

In the next three weeks, Melton will take on ninth-placed Moonee Ponds, sixth-placed Werribee and third-placed Preston-Reservoir.

Although they’ve come off a finals run, Adams said there were no illusions that the 2015-16 season would be a step-up in class. Melton has been drawn against competition powerhouses Altona Sports, Werribee, Moonee Valley and Glenroy this season.

“There are a lot of powerful sides in it, but that doesn’t bother us. Our aim is to avoid relegation first and then try to make the finals.”
