A cricketer with drive

This big hitter is looking to make his mark on the Victorian cricket scene.

Eynesbury cricketer Cayden, 12, has been selected for the Victorian under-12 School Sports squad to play in a national carnival at Cobram in January.

He trialled for the squad in June and was excited to have made the cut, proud dad Jim Herlihy told Star Weekly.

Mr Herlihy, who is president of Eynesbury Cricket Club, said Cayden’s passion for the sport shone through from his early years.

“His first year of cricket was 2014,”
Mr Herlihy said.

“People have asked me if I’m worried that Cayden will get burnt out, but I know that he loves it. If it’s daylight outside, he’s out in the backyard with the cricket nets practising every single school morning.”

Cayden trains six days a week with the club’s under-14, under-15 and senior teams.

His dad said that he hoped Cayden’s success would pave the way for other Melton cricketers.

“It’s tough for Melton clubs to play at that level for various reasons,” Mr Herlihy said.

“Hopefully, Cricket Victoria will start looking out here more for talent because there are some fantastic players.

“Part of me thinks Cayden deserves to be in the state team because of how hard he works, and part of me is sad for other great players out here.”
