Bacchus Marsh Gold may sit atop the Central Highlands Division’s top grade, but it won’t take anything for granted in the second half of the season.
Bacchus Marsh has lost just one game in the first part of the season and sits percentage ahead of Kyneton Golf.
President Glenn Arthur said they hadn’t expected to be on top of the ladder at the mid part of the season.
“The sides are pretty settled and everyone is training twice a week,” he said.
“Everyone is keen to see the club succeed.
“We beat Gisborne and Kyneton at home and had a close loss to Kyneton Golf… So that’s two wins against sides in the top four.
Arthur said despite a great first half of the season, he said the biggest tests were still to come.
Just three points separate the top three teams and 20 points between the top five teams.
“Lancefield played off in a grand final last year and they are fifth,” he said.
“We play them this week, so things can change pretty quickly.
“We play the teams that are sitting second to fifth and they are all away games. “We also have to play on grass and we haven’t done that this season.
While the first side sits atop the division 1 ladder, their second side is without a win in the same division.
Arthur said while they always knew it would be tough, there were plenty of positive signs for the side and club moving forward.
“We’re confident we could see them get some upset wins,” he said.
“It excited everyone for the challenge they would have this year. We’re now had every player get the opportunity to play division 1.
“Moving into next season [if the bottom side goes down] it gives us 32 players who have played division 1 bowls.”
In a coup for Bacchus Marsh, the club will host the Courier Shield in February.
The competition involves representative teams from the CHBD, Ballarat Bowls Division and Goldfields competition face off against each other.
Meanwhile Phil Minniti claimed the CHBD singles title.
Arthur said they believe that Minniti is the first Bacchus Marsh player to claim the honour.
