RDFL: Rams butt up against Tigers’ brick wall

A six-goal haul from Rockbank’s Lachlan Calder wasn’t enough to lift the Rams to a first win of the season.

Taking on Riddell District Football League rival Lancefield, Rockbank fell 26 points short, 15.11 (101) – 11.9 (75).

After trailing by 15 points at half-time, the Rams had clawed back into the contest after an improved third quarter in which they booted three goals and restricted Lancefield to just one.

That allowed the margin to be cut to three points at the final change.

But the Rams couldn’t sustain the pressure, which allowed the Tigers to regain control.

Lancefield forward Jonathon Kent proved the difference between the two sides, kicking six goals.

While Calder was the standout for Rockbank, he was well supported by Tim Senserrick and Leigh Sobotnicki, who were also among the club’s best players.

The Rams had six individual goal-kickers.

For Lancefield, Tevita Fonua was named best on ground.

Rockbank now has to wait two weeks before getting another chance to secure its first win.

The Rams will take on Broadford after this weekend’s bye.

After three rounds, Rockbank is 12th on the ladder, joining Kilmore and Woodend- Hesket as clubs still looking for their first win.

It’s been a better start to the season for the Rams’ reserves, just one game outside the top six.

Also in the RDFL, Diggers Rest got back on the winners’ list after a strong performance against Rupertswood.

The Burras recovered from a 12-point deficit at quarter-time to control the match from midway through the second term.

Brent Tuckey was impressive up forward for Diggers Rest, booting three goals.

He was well supported by Cameron McCabe, who also kicked three for the match and was dominant around the ground.

The 14.7 (91) – 7.12 (54) win is the Burras’ second of the year.

After three rounds, Diggers Rest is fourth on the RDFL ladder.
