Ballarat FL: Darley Devils storm home to win elimination final

Darley’s Ballarat Football League finals campaign is alive and well after a 20-point second elimination final win against Lake Wendouree on Sunday.

The Devils didn’t have things all their own way, though, and were forced to fight during a tense final term at Darley Park.

After trailing by 10 points at three-quarter- time, Darley responded as a flag contender should, booting four goals in the final 30 minutes to storm over the top of the Lakers to win, 11.21 (87) to 9.13 (67).

Darley produced some quality football at both ends in the final term. The Devils increased their defensive pressure and, for the second time in the match, held Lake Wendouree scoreless for a quarter.

Corey Cullen showed a liking for the big stage and was named Darley’s best player. He was well supported by a versatile forward line which had eight individual goalkickers. Shane Page, Jake Edwards and Steven Kennedy were the standouts, booting two majors each.

Darley will turn its attention to its semi-final clash against Redan this Sunday.

The winner of that game will progress to the preliminary final, while the loser’s season will be over.

The last time the two sides met was in round 11 of the home-and-away season, with Darley coming out on top by nine points, 53-44.
