A nervous Rockbank has fallen at the first hurdle in its first appearance in Riddell District Football League finals in 10 years.

The Rams were knocked out by Riddell, who beat them 15.19 (100) to 9.12 (66) in the elimination final at Eric Boardman Reserve on Saturday.

The Rams conceded four first-quarter goals to fall 20 points behind by the first break.

But despite winning the second term, Rockbank struggled to make serious inroads on the scoreboard.

Riddell showed its class in the second half, booting 10 goals to wrap up the win and
set up a semi-final meeting with Romsey. Rockbank president Mark Smith paid tribute to the Bombers.

“We suffered finals nerves, there’s no doubt about that,” Smith said. “They were very good and their ruckman was outstanding. He gave them first use of the ball.”

Jamie Zerafa went down fighting for Rockbank and was judged to be the Rams’ best player. He was well supported by Jordan Baumgartner and Harley Cameron.

After his team finished on the bottom of the ladder two years ago, Smith was proud of the fight his players showed to qualify for finals.

“We’re very proud of the way we finished the year and to make finals was our aim,” he said.

“Obviously we didn’t win the finals, but it’s pretty hard from sixth position. Two years ago we were on the bottom of the ladder. It’s a gradual build-up and we’re getting there.

“The experience is fantastic and now I think the players will have the expectation next year to make it. It gives the club something to work on now, and we know where we’re at.”

It wasn’t just the Rockbank senior side which came a long way in 2014. The club’s under-18s also qualified for finals, but lost to Kilmore on Sunday.

“Two years ago we didn’t even have an under-18 side, so for them to qualify for finals is a great achievement,” Smith said. “They want to come back next year, which is great.”
