RDNL: Diggers Rest keeps finals hopes alive

The fight for the last spot in the finals of the Riddell District Netball League will go down to the final round of the season.

Macedon holds sixth spot, just ahead of Diggers Rest on percentage.

Many thought Macedon would clinch the final place last weekend as the Cats had a bye while Burras had the tough task of facing third-placed Melton Centrals at Centrals’ home court, MacPherson Park .

But Diggers Rest kept its finals hopes alive with a shock defeat of the Centrals, 52-44, on Saturday.

Nothing separated the two teams for the first three quarters before the Burras shot away in the final term with 14 goals to the Centrals’ eight.

Selina Chenhalls top-scored for the Burras with 26 goals.

The battle for a finals spot doesn’t get any easier for the Burras who face top side Rupertswood, who are coming off a bye.

Rupo will be looking for the win to secure the top spot as second-placed Riddell has
the bye.

The Cats face Romsey, which jumped to third following Centrals’ loss and its 59-21 win over Woodend Hesket.

The Redbacks will enter the match in a battle to finish third with only percentage separating them, Centrals and fifth-placed Wallan.

On paper, the Redbacks have the hardest job with the Centrals and Magpies playing the lowly placed Broadford and Rockbank.

In the other match for the final round Woodend-Hesket faces Lancefield.

The Tigers, who lost 50-40 to Wallan on Saturday, will finish the season in eighth spot.

The Hawks will finish 10th or 11th.
