Melton Phoenix coach Theo Karapanagiotidis believes his side missed a golden opportunity to take three points from Bell Park in the state league 4 soccer match on Saturday.
The battle between fifth and sixth on the ladder ended in a goal each and a point each with a 1-1 draw.
Karapanagiotidis said his side could have taken all three points but for a string of missed chances.
“It was a very frustrating day,” he said.
“There was silence in our dressing room after the match and we really felt it was two points lost, not one point gained.
“We should have finished that game off in the first half and even in the second half we just had so many chances.
“Our final passes were off and we missed a couple of really good chances.”
Melton went into half time leading 1-0 before giving up the advantage to a Bell Park equaliser when play resumed.
The goalscorer for the Phoenix was Jason Moody, who has now scored eight this season.
The loss continues Melton’s poor run of form this season away from home . . . Phoenix has won just one road game in 2014.
“We’re taking the wrong options in front of goal and we’re paying for it,” Karapanagiotidis said.
“In the last two away games, against Sebastopol and Bell Park, we should have had six points, not the two we got.
“At the end of the day, if we’d had those four points, we’d be in the top four and close to third.”
Melton will have a bye this week before taking on fourth-placed Maribyrnong Greens in round 16.
In other state league 4 results on Saturday, Hoppers Crossing beat Brimbank 2-1, Melbourne City was too good for Point Cook 4-0, while Laverton and Altona North played out a 1-1 draw.
