FFV: Melton Phoenix’s happy returns inside the top four

Melton Phoenix is benefiting from having almost a full squad to pick from in FFV state league 4 west division, enabling it to cement its spot in the top four.

After being outclassed by Strathmore last week, Melton was too strong at home for Point Cook, winning 3-1.

Phoenix president Steve Fuller said while he was happy with the win, the margin could have been bigger.

“Point Cook came up to division 4 with us this season after we’d won the league and they finished second,” he said. “We started off solidly and looked like the team we were last year. There were times when it was quite even, but we were always going to win; it was a matter of by how much.”

Last season’s leading club goalscorer Jason Moody scored his first hat-trick for the season with all three goals for the Phoenix.

“We’ve had a couple of injuries and people going away,” Fuller said.

“Moody missed three weeks overseas and Chris Briggs missed games with injuries … [but] everyone is starting to play well together.”

Fuller said the team was achieving everything it had wanted when it set up a five-year plan last year.

“It began last year and the aim is to be in state league 2 by the end of the five years,” he said.

“Last year, I thought we had the squad to win the league, but we did.

“[We’re] looking at finishing in the top five this season, consolidating ourselves and looking at promotion next year. We’ve done everything right off field as well.”

This week the Phoenix take on Melbourne City, which is one spot above Melton on the ladder in third.
