Ballarat FL: Melton South considers its future in league

Melton South Football Club says it will watch with interest the Ballarat Football League’s response to Sunbury Lions’ move to consider their future in the league.

Last week, the Lions said they were considering whether to stay in the BFL or move to either the neighbouring Riddell District Football League or the Bendigo league.

Lions supporters have indicated to the club they would like to move to the RDFL.

Melton South president Peter Earl said his club’s board had also discussed the possibility of moving leagues.

“In general, at a board level, we have discussed it,” he said.

Earl said the club wouldn’t win a flag in the BFL competition under the current recruiting system.

He said North Ballarat players would always play for Ballarat FL sides when not required for VFL duty.

“None of the players will play for us,” he said.

“We have to get players from Hoppers Crossing and down that way, and they want mega-bucks.

“We are pleased with the structure and the professionalism of the [Ballarat] league and the administration is very good.”

The Lions will meet the league this Sunday, after which the clubs in the eastern block of the BFL – Sunbury, Melton, Melton South, Darley and Bacchus Marsh – will hold their own meeting.

“Whatever they [the league] put to Sunbury will help us decide what we will do,” Earl said.

Melton president Stephen Bartlett said he was surprised by the Lions’ announcement, and his club was not investigating changing leagues.
