RDFL: Diggers Rest to face Riddell in grand final

Diggers Rest and Riddell will square off for the Riddell District Football League premiership this Sunday at Lancefield Park.

Riddell booked its spot with an impressive 21.11 (137) to 10.11
(71) win over Sunbury on Saturday, comfortably accounting for the
Kangaroos at Macedon’s Tony Clarke Reserve.

The Burras won through to the big dance with a win over Sunbury a
week earlier, and will be feeling refreshed and confident, having beaten
Riddell in their past two outings, including the qualifying final.

The Bombers have had to do it the long way following the
qualifying loss, but have played exceptional footy in the past fortnight
with big wins over last year’s grand finalists.

Riddell got the jump on Sunbury early on Saturday, kicking five
goals to one in the opening term to take a 29-point lead into quarter
time.

The Kangaroos had chances in the second term but kicked 3.4 as
Riddell piled on eight goals to stretch the margin to 56 points by the
half-time siren.

Jarrod Silvester snared four majors for the victors, while Tierone
Cuffe and Chris Meacham were the only multiple goalkickers for the
Kangaroos with two apiece.

Bombers’ coach Troy Scoble said he was thrilled with the brand of
football his side displayed. “We haven’t done too much wrong in the
second half of the season aside from the losses to Diggers.”

Scoble said his team faced a big challenge this Sunday against the Burras, who henominates as the best team of the past two years.

“Diggers are a super side,” he said.

“They’ve got so many experienced players and match-winners on
every line. They’ve been able to shut us down and beat us twice this
year, so we need to find something new.

“Their experience has been a key factor in the close games we’ve
had and they’re clearly the favourites going into the game having beaten
us two weeks ago, and they deserve to be.

“But it’s a big ground at Lancefield and we’re confident of
putting up a good fight. We know it’s gonna be one of those games that
will take our very best to win.”
