Ballarat FL: Cobras’ strike a real stunner

IF not for Melbourne’s even dozen in the AFL on Sunday, Bacchus Marsh could have claimed the most impressive final quarter of the weekend.

In a perilous position, down 14 at three-quarter-time against Sebastopol, the Cobras rallied with eight goals to one to win by 28 points.

The 17.9 (111) to 12.11 (83) win gets Bacchus Marsh off the mark and gives it momentum heading into this Saturday’s showdown with arch-rival Darley. Matt Denham booted four goals and best afield Daniel Velden three to lead the scoring.

Bacchus Marsh coach Doug Hawkins said there were a few nervous moments through the match, particularly when Sebastopol extended its lead late in the third quarter.

Sebastopol coach Shawne Dummett praised his young side, but conceded a lack of confidence in the final quarter was the eventual killer. “We panicked a bit too much.”
