Woman drowns in Lerderderg Gorge

A woman drowned at Lerderderg Gorge on Friday, December 6.

Bacchus Marsh SES was called to the Lerderderg Gorge MacKenzies Flat picnic area after a female got into difficulty whilst swimming at about 4.35pm.

The yet to be formally identified female swimmer drowned and her body was later recovered by Victoria Police Search and Rescue divers.

Victoria Police said that the death, which was not being treated as suspicious, will be referred to the coroner.

Bacchus Marsh SES reminds people visiting the gorge that while the water looks shallow and calm from the river banks, it is over 3 metres deep in places.

This is the second drowning in very similar circumstances at the site in just over 12 months.
