The Willows Homestead Reserve has been transformed by the magic touches of a local plant group.

The reserve has come a long way and the native plants are now thriving, according to Australian Plant Society Melton Bacchus Marsh member Barb Pye.

The group has been working for a decade to beautify the gardens at the reserve, and it’s finally coming together.

“It’s starting to look really nice after a very long time,” Ms Pye says.

“Now, we’re also interested in the Melton Botanic Garden.”

Ms Pye says Melton’s dry landscape provides the perfect breeding ground for Australian plants, which thrive in desert-like conditions.

And there’s more to the native flora than gum trees, she says.

“We’re very keen for people to plant more natives and they’re particularly good for attracting wildlife,” she says.

“We want people to know that there are small native plants. For example, the native daisies look really good in any situation and in this garden there are eremophilas, and they are really beautiful.”

The group meets at the Willows, 3 Reserve Road, Melton, on the fourth Wednesday of each month at 7.30pm.
