White ‘garden’ for fallen at Melton civic centre

21/04/2017. Melton/Moorabool Star Weekly. Crosses. Issue Date 25/04. Melton. Members of the public are invited to place white commemorative crosses in a specially marked area on the Melton Civic Centre lawn. Pictured is Joe Doyle ( Vietnam Veteran and Mens Shed Team Leader ). Picture Shawn Smits.

Hundreds of white crosses commemorating Australian troops will be laid on the lawns at the Melton civic centre.

The Melton Men’s Shed ‘sheddies’ have been busy carving and painting the crosses, which are available for a gold coin donation from the Melton library, civic centre and visitor information centre.

All proceeds will go to the Partners of Veterans Association.

Individual crosses will be laid out to form a large cross in a marked area on the Melton civic centre lawn until May 2.

Mayor Sophie Ramsey said the initiative was a “beautiful tribute” to remember fallen Australian troops.

“Anzac Day is an opportunity to pause and to remember those who fought and defended our nation,” Cr Ramsey said.

“We are ever grateful to those who helped preserve our freedom and way of life through their sacrifice, and this initiative is just a small way we, as a community, can keep the memory of our fallen heroes alive.”
