Wave of new water works

Booming population growth in Melton is driving construction of essential sewer and water infrastructure in Western Water’s service region.

Five projects, with a total value of $20.7 million, are under construction in Aintree, Truganina, Diggers Rest, Melton and Deanside.

A new sewer pump station and three-kilometre pipeline are being built at Aintree to service the population of more than 3000 residents.

At the Mt Atkinson estate, a drinking water pipeline is being laid while work has also started on a two-kilometre sewerage pipe between Diggers Rest and the Sunbury recycled water treatment plant.

Pipe works in Melton and Deanside aim to help increase capacity and improve reliability to properties in those suburbs.

Western Water acting managing director Rob Murphy said the company was investing significantly in projects to support growing communities.

“We estimate that 50 new families move into our service region each week,” Mr Murphy said. “Catering to this growth has been a key focus.”

“We will spend about $68 million in capital works in 2018-19, a lot of that in growth areas. This investment will be ongoing over the coming years, as we continue to meet the increased demand for our services.”

All five projects are expected to be completed by June this year, Mr Murphy said.
