Upgrade for Melton school

The state government has allocated almost $1 million for a double-storey portable building at Melton South Primary School.

The building, which will be air-conditioned and resemble a fully-fledged, state-of-the-art classroom will be ready for the next school year.

The state government allocated more than $70 million in this year’s budget for “relocatable” buildings.

Melton South Primary School, which is dealing with an explosion in student numbers, had missed out on upgrades in recent budgets.

Upper house Western Victoria MP Jaala Pulford said “important new works” could now be undertaken, following the $947,000 commitment for a portable at the school.

“We’re upgrading schools across Victoria so families can know that no matter where they live they can access a great local school the whole community is proud of,” Ms Pulford said.

“The upgrade is about more than giving Melton South Primary School students the facilities they deserve. It’s also about helping build community pride in a great local school.”

The Age revealed three years ago there would be a “massive migration” of portable classrooms to accommodate student numbers in growth corridors.

An education department document stated the western metropolitan region received the highest number of portable transfers with 61 in 2012-13.

Melton South Primary School was contacted for comment.
