When David O’Connor attended a Cancer Council event in 2013 it prompted him to visit his doctor for a check-up.
Several months later, the Diggers Rest man was diagnosed with prostate cancer.
“The talk and discussion about cancer is what made me go and get checked,” he said.
“I had an aggressive form of cancer so if I hadn’t had that check-up, we wouldn’t be having this interview … I would’ve been in hospital trying to figure out how to survive.”
Mr O’Connor had two prostate biopsies, an MRI, a bone scan and a radical prostatectomy.
He’ll be hosting his second Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea event this Thursday at Houdini’s Cafe in Diggers Rest. Cafe manager Frank Labombarda will be donating his time, cafe and food for what he describes as a “really good cause”.
And like many people, the event is close to his heart.
“I think we all know someone who has cancer – that’s a given,” he said.
The morning tea will run from 10am-noon on Thursday, May 26, at the cafe, 52 Old Calder Highway, Diggers Rest. There will be raffles, auctions and door prizes. Tickets cost $20. Details: 0417 300 707
