With one simple – albeit mighty – gesture, three Melton students will change the lives of strangers living with blood cancer.
Rebecca, Cassandra and Cooper have shaved their heads for the Leukaemia Foundation’s ‘World’s Greatest Shave’ event, after Rebecca – Catholic Regional College’s social justice leader – raised the idea of taking part in this year’s event.
Cassandra and Rebecca will donate their long hair to be turned into a wig for those living with cancer, and Cooper’s hair will be used in compost or floating booms to absorb oil spills at sea.
The school’s social justice teacher Margaret Rowe-Watts said students not shaving
their hair were able to have their hair temporarily coloured for the day. The spray cans were collected and passed on to the Leukaemia Foundation so they didn’t end up in landfill.
“The whole process has taken on a sustainable approach so that nothing is wasted or ends up in landfill,” Ms Rowe-Watts said.
“Cassandra and Rebecca want to show their support for those with blood cancers while Cooper says that he knows of people who have suffered with this and he wants to show them his support.”
