Students at Springside K-9 College have gone wild for conservation.
Year 6 students worked with Melton council on raising awareness of their local grasslands as part of their recent environmental studies.
Teacher Trish Wan said the students were inspired by an environmental educator from the Melton council.
“We wanted to work jointly on improving and increasing local community understanding of the local grasslands,” Ms Wan said.
“In particular, we have focused on the grasslands opposite the front of our college.
“We’ve been fascinated to learn that, in fact, this land has many protected species of wildflower and that the council takes a lot of care of the area with litter removal, spraying of weeds, and planting.
“Our project began with a survey to examine our understanding of the grasslands. We found that we knew least about wildflowers and what the land used to look like.
“Students then chose an area of personal interest.”
Students planted wildflowers to restore a corner of the grasslands nearest the college and raised money for the Keralian Indian expatriot group Utsav Malayalee Samaj’s Trees for Life project along Kororoit Creek.
