Update: this warning has now been cancelled. There are no longer severe storms occurring.
The Bureau of Meteorology has issued an emergency warning for Melbourne and its surrounds, including Melton and Moorabool, for severe thunderstorms.
These thunderstorms are moving from the north of Melbourne towards the south to southeast and is causing intense rainfall that may lead to dangerous and life-threatening flash flooding is likely.
In its warning, the BOM said: “Prepare to take shelter and be aware of potential hazards caused by the severe weather. Hazards include floodwater, debris, damaged building, trees down, fallen power lines”.
“Park your car undercover and away from trees, stay inside if conditions outside appear dangerous [and] contact family members and neighbours to ensure they are aware of the situation, if safe to do so.”
BOM is expected to continue updating residents.
