Stolen water in Trentham

Coliban Water is currently investigating reports of water theft in Trentham, warning the activity is undermining efforts to maintain local water supplies during the hot weather.

Water theft occurs when water is taken from the drinking water network without permission, either deliberately or inadvertently by people unaware of the rules.

Coliban Water have said incidents are counteracting ongoing water carting operations designed to help maintain water levels and ensure the continued supply of safe drinking water to the Trentham community.

The illegal water use is reportedly reducing the benefits of water carting and leaving less water available for residents while increasing the risk of low water pressure during periods of high demand.

While some water authorities allow registered water carters to access the drinking water network, Coliban Water said this is only permitted in limited circumstances when carting on its behalf, such as to maintain supply to a community.

In the Coliban Water region, carters must use approved standpipes and hold the appropriate permits.

Water theft holds fines of up to $990,000 for companies and $198,000 for individuals.

Anyone who suspects water theft is encouraged to contact Coliban Water on 1300 363 200 or email coliban@coliban.com.au.
