Sprinting into history

The Myrniong Historic Car Sprint is racing toward its 16th year.

Featuring vintage and historic racing cars dating back to the early 20th century, the annual event will be back next month to raise money for the Myrniong Hall restoration.

A hundred competitors will be racing along an 850 metre section of Myrniong-Korobeit Road.

Race secretary of the Austin 7 Club and Myrniong Hall Committee, David Lowe, said most of the cars were fairly mature and travel at high speeds.

“We feature cars between 1920 and 1930. And we run cars up to about 1975, which include Mustangs and Camaros,” he said.

“But there are a lot of MG sports cars and Austin Healeys.

“A lot of the cars are travelling over 160 to 170 kilometres in the lower stages before they go up to the hill.

“So, the speed is quiet high.”

Mr Lowe said they received welcome support from the Moorabool council.

“The council is very co-operative with us,” he said. “They look after us. They maintain the condition of the road, which is most important.

“And it’s most important considering the speeds that are obtained on it.”

There will also be a classic car display and catering by the Myrniong Hall committee.

It’s on Sunday, April 8, from 9am-4pm.
