When Bob and Val Turner decided to give back to their community, they thought what better way to do it than support its young people.
And the Gap on Graham was born, taking shape as a building on Graham Street, Melton, where young people can get together, hang out and have a laugh.
Mr Turner, who is also a Melton councillor, said the initiative wouldn’t have been successful without the help of local people and their generous donations.
A recent fundraising event brought in more than $8500 for the social hub, meaning organisers can keep its doors open.
“The Melton Residents’ Association offered us a $500 cheque,” Mr Turner said. “To be honest, our rent is $4000 a month [so that will help].”
Mr Turner says the facility is important for young people to socialise and get them off the streets.
“We’ve asked some people, ‘What would you do if you weren’t here on a Friday night?’ and they say, ‘I don’t know; just sit at home or go to bed’. The kids who come here can get away from whatever it is they’re going through.”
Mr Turner says they’re hoping to get some businesses or philanthropists to donate and support the Gap on Graham.
