Victoria Police’s Transit West Tasking Team and Transit Proactive Unit are offering free anti-theft number plate screws tonight at Melton train station.

Officers will be available from 4pm till 6pm at the train station on Staughton Street in a bid to encourage residents to consider number plate safety.

Melton’s Leading Senior Constable Joanne Mutsaerts said police have found the anti-theft screws can “limit the likelihood of plates being stolen”.

Leading Senior Constable Mutsaerts said number plate theft can be in connection with other serious crimes and that the screws are a “proven crime prevention technique”.

Victims also may not realise a theft has occurred, as often just one number plate is stolen and occurs when cars are parked at train stations and shopping centres for long periods of time.

If residents miss out on the opportunity tonight, Melton police station has the screws available to be collected free of charge for residents.
