Normally prestigious awards are handed out in front of a packed room of onlookers.
But for Melton Centrals cricketer Candace Hulett, it was a vastly different experience.
The run machine was last week announced as the winner of Cricket Victoria Women’s Community Cricket north-west B one-day and T20 player of the year awards.
However it wasn’t until she logged onto Twitter that she found out.
“Obviously there was no ceremony, so yeah I logged on to Twitter and that’s how I found out,” she said.
“I hadn’t been told anything so it was a nice surprise.”
It’s the third straigh year she has taken out the one-day player of the year.
Hulett was also the leading run scorer in both the one-day and T20 competitions, but said individual achievements mean little to her.
“I came back to Melton Centrals three after a stint in Premier League cricket,” she said.
“After a year in the men’s competition a few of the younger girls I’d coached in Western Spirits asked if we could start a team.
“It’s progressed really well – we’ve had probably 20 players come through the team across three years. There’s a core group that have stuck together which has been great.”
The team is now one of the benchmarks of the competition, having won a premiership and competed for one last season.
“That’s the best thing about all this. I’d gladly trade in all my individual awards for a premiership any day.”
