Melton police are planning another operation to crack down on traffic offences near schools after last month’s blitz detected more than 100 offences.
School crossings on Bulmans Road, Melton West; Wilson Road, Melton South; Community Hub, Hillside; and Hume Drive, Caroline Springs were targeted over the two-day operation.
Acting Sergeant Dave Sanders said police detected a range of offences, including three instances of cars displaying false plates.
The roads had been identified by Melton council as being “of particular concern” because of near misses and drivers breaking the law.
“The operation was good – we were out there talking to people and most of the community were happy we were there,” Acting Sergeant Sanders said.
“We’ve got a meeting with principals, school councils [this week] and we’ll get some feedback from them and discuss what other schools they believe would benefit from an operation … and we’ll look at running another operation.”
Acting Sergeant Sanders said police hoped such operations would drum into drivers the seriousness of heeding traffic rules, especially around schools.
“And hopefully the word is spreading around that the council and police are out there,” he said.
During the two-day operation, police recovered a stolen car and detected 16 speeding offences, three mobile phone offences, a range of parking offences, five unregistered vehicles and three unlicensed drivers.
