Relay ready to kick off

This weekend will be all about family for many of the teams participating in Melton’s Relay for Life.

Ohana, meaning family in Hawaiian, is one of 14 teams already registered for the relay which starts on Saturday at Tabcorp Park.

Teams from the area have banked more than $28,000 ahead of the event – nearly halfway to a goal of $60,000.

Ohana is leading the fundraising efforts in Melton, raising more than $7000 through a Hawaiian night and the generosity of its supporters.

The relay, one of the Cancer Council’s major annual fundraisers that is now in its eighth year in Melton, brings thousands of families, friends, work and community groups together from around the state to celebrate and remember loved ones affected by cancer.

Melton chair Mary Carroll said the Relay for Life community is strong in the area.

“A lot of the teams have been here before and are returning because they love it so much,” Ms Carroll said.

Teams that raise more than $5000 can allocate the money towards a preferred area of research.

The Relay will run from 4pm on Saturday and end at 10am on Sunday. A Candlelight Ceremony is also held at 8pm on Saturday. Teams can register on the day.
