Young offenders have been learning new skills which have enabled them to help Melton youth most in need, thanks to an innovative program.
Each week, 10 young people take part in the Department of Justice initiative – Fix the Cycle – where they learn bike repair skills as part of their Community Corrections Orders.
Once fixed, the bikes are given to those who’ve made contact with Melton council’s youth services, based on need.
Melton mayor Sophie Ramsey said the innovative program was a “win-win” situation.
“This program is a great example of how young offenders can learn a valuable trade in bike repair, while at the same time giving back to their community,” Cr Ramsey said.
“We expect that up to 50 repaired bikes will be donated each year.”
