Police are disappointed by the number of motorists who gambled with their lives over the Melbourne Cup long weekend.
Close to 150 motorists were caught flouting the law on Melton and Moorabool roads over the five-day statewide operation between November 3 and midnight on Melbourne Cup day.
In Melton, 71 drivers copped fines for speeding, another 72 drivers were caught speeding in Moorabool.
Twelve Moorabool motorists were caught driving unregistered vehicles while there were 11 unregistered vehicle offences in Melton.
Officers patrolled all major highways at country race meetings and transport hubs across Victoria throughout thee operation. In total there were 9030 traffic offences and 976 criminal offences detected.
Statewide, more than 3000 motorists were caught speeding, 664 mobile phone offences were detected and 333 seat belt offences were recorded.
Assistant Commissioner Doug Fryer said it was concerning to see motorists disregarding the road rules and jeopardising public safety.
“Police aren’t here to spoil the fun; we just want to see everyone get to their destination safely,” Mr Fryer said.
“Eight fatalities occurred over the weekend, which means there are eight families who are now mourning the loss of a loved one. We don’t want to see any more deaths on our roads.”
