Melton’s emergency services are urging people to remain vigilant while roaming the streets playing Pokemon GO.

Police sergeant Kevin Dans said that while there was nothing illegal about playing the game, gamers should be aware of their surroundings and heed safety warnings.

The Pokemon GO app that has taken the world by storm is a smartphone game based on a Nintendo video game made popular in the 1990s.

It uses GPS technology and layers gameplay onto the real world. Players are required to wander the streets in search of digital creatures known as Pokemons.

“I’ve seen footage of people stopping on highways,” Sergeant Dans said.

“[Like] any type of game, they’re there for people to enjoy, but safety is paramount when it comes to these sorts of things.

“There’s nothing illegal about playing the game, but if people are caught committing road offences, such as playing while driving, they will be charged.”

Melton State Emergency Services spokesman Karl Sass said gamers were congregating around some emergency service buildings in the hunt for Pokemons.

“The take-home message is to go out and have fun but ensure that’s done safely,” Mr Sass said.

“Be conscious of your surroundings, but also keep an eye out on your safety and your fellow Pokemon hunters.”

More than 700 Melton and Bacchus Marsh Pokemon GO users joined a Facebook group to discuss the game and locations of Pokemons and training centres.
